Walking into the world of colours

Staff Reporter

Kochi: T. Kaladharan, as an artist, is known to move away from conventions. So it was natural for him to think differently for summer camps that he organises at Orthic Creative Centre.

This year, the camp is bubbling with activities. Though Kaladharan is finding it difficult to manage little children, 43 of them and majority aged less than 10 years, the camp has definitely come alive with songs, colour and theatre.

On Thursday, poet Chemmanam Chacko interacted with the children.

He gave them a taste of Malayalam through proverbs and his poems - to drive home the importance of mother tongue.

He, along with writer Chandanavattom Namboodiri, led the children through the magic of words.

P.V. Nandan was also felicitated on getting Kerala Lalitkala Akademi award.

Chemmanam Chacko presented a special pencil brought from the Himalayas to the artist.

The camp began on Tuesday with Nandan doing demonstration on portraits. Sanal Antony did a couple of landscapes in watercolour on Wednesday. Senior artist K.K. Rajappan will demonstrate working on clay on Friday.

"The basic concept behind these summer camps is to introduce children to the world of art and theatre. I make it a point to give them tips like different possibilities of using brush and effect of using colour on wet paper," said Kaladharan.

Not many artists are ready to part with simple tips like these that bring about the mesmerising effect to compositions.

The camp is also instilling basic lessons in theatre. Murugan, an alumnus of the School of Drama, Thrissur, is giving the children training in theatre.

On Saturday, the last day of the camp, the team will perform painting-theatre at a couple of houses in the neighbourhood.

The concept is while children will perform a play on the theme Adhinivesathinte Nizhalukal (Shadows of Invasion), Kaladharan will complete a painting.

The play is written by Purushothaman and Abhishek is assisting in direction.

The camp will ensure that the participants will go back to their homes, richer with memories of colour and forms. Some might even return next year.
