Several areas go without power

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Several areas in the city had no power supply on Thursday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. because of maintenance work by BESCOM (Bangalore Electricity Supply Company) at the 66/11 kV Banaswadi, L.R. Bande and Pottery Road stations.

The Hindu received several calls from its readers who complained that the power supply had not been restored even at 8 p.m.

Ponn R. Chidambaram, a resident of Cooke Town, said that the power supply to his area was disconnected at around 8.30 a.m.

"The power supply was restored for a few minutes at around 7 p.m. and it was disconnected again. I have tried to lodge a complaint, but there has been no response. I even contacted the Joint Engineer of the area. He was unhelpful," he said. Mr. Chidambaram quoted the Joint Engineer as saying that "he could not do anything". "Even as I was speaking, he cut the call," he alleged and said that they should at least respond properly to aggrieved consumers.

When contacted, the Assistant Executive Engineer of the station concerned said that BESCOM officials were trying to finish the maintenance works. "We are trying to ensure that the consumers are not affected much. However, the work at one of the stations took a long time to be completed."

About the fact that consumers were not able to lodge their complaints, the official said, "We are flooded with calls from consumers whenever there is a power shutdown. There is little that we can do in such situations," he added.
