Kochi: A day after Kochi Corporation urged the District Collector to assess the loss of revenue land in the city, the district administration embarked on a detailed survey to expose the alleged encroachment. A 10-member team led by Deputy Collector A.K. Thankappan (Land Reforms) was pressed into action in the afternoon. The surveying process started from Madhava Pharmacy junction before it was wound up near the White Planet on M.G. Road at around 6.30 p.m. The team surveyed the area based on original survey documents and Puramboke register. The initial examination revealed that some encroachments had taken place though it could be confirmed only after detailed assessments and verifying it with relevant documents, A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, Ernakulam District Collector, said. He said the team was getting all assistance from the Corporation authorities. He made it clear that he did not want to rush with the process and being criticised for acting in an unfair and unjustifiable manner. He said the survey and the consequent verification were to be done in a painstaking manner. The Collector said the survey was progressing slowly as the thrust was on initiating a foolproof action. Stating that the survey and subsequent actions would continue in the coming days, he said that it would take at least five days to complete. The Collector hinted at taking the process to its logical end with or without further instructions from the Corporation. He said the survey team was mainly concentrating on the M.G. Road area. Mr. Hanish said an emergency meeting of Revenue Divisional Officers, Thalisdars, Surveyors, Resurvey Officers and other related officials was convened on May 24 at 3 p.m. The meeting would evaluate the survey report and decide on the future course of action in coordination with the State Government. A team comprising two Thalisdars, two Deputy Thalisdars, an Additional Thalisdar and four Surveyors is scheduled to resume survey on Friday morning. The Collector said that more staff would be made available for survey in the coming days.
