Pre-paid auto services to be streamlined

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: In an effort to streamline pre-paid autorickshaw services within the city limits, 200 autorickshaws will be granted permit under the pre-paid system, A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, District Collector, has said.

Talking to presspersons here on Thursday, Mr. Hanish said that in recent checks it was detected that out of the total 5,000-odd autos granted permit to operate in the city limits about 1,050 autos were found lying dormant for a long time. And so the decision to issue fresh permits for these slots, and 200 autos would be drafted into the pre-paid system on an experimental basis. Initially they would be operated based around railway stations and bus stand, Mr. Hanish said.

The existing pre-paid system, especially in the railway stations, was almost defunct as the Railways imposed exorbitant charges for parking on the station premises leaving the entire operation of the service unviable, Mr. Hanish said.
