BANGALORE: Distraught over the police allegedly harassing his two sons, a 52-year-old man committed suicide by hanging himself at his house in Hanumanthnagar police station limits on Wednesday. The police gave his name as Sambasiva Murthy, a resident of 1st Stage, Banashankari. He owned a tea stall in Gandhi Bazaar. Murthy's sons, Ranjan Kumar and Dileep Kumar, were friends of Raju Reddy, a history sheeter. A few days ago a rival gang attacked Reddy and the police registered a case. Hanumanthnagar police summoned Ranjan Kumar and Dileep Kumar to the police station for interrogation and even after obtaining their statements, the police allegedly harassed them. Fearing further harassment, Ranjan Kumar fled from home a few days ago, one of Murthy's relatives told The Hindu on Thursday. Murthy's wife Kamakshi, a life insurance agent, met Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Alok Kumar on Wednesday and apprised him of the alleged police harassment. Mr. Alok Kumar said that he had advised her to meet Hanumanthnagar Police Inspector Dharanesh. However, when Kamakshi went to the Hanumanthnagar police station on Wednesday, Mr. Dharanesh is said to have abused her in public. Subsequently, an upset Murthy hanged himself to death. Mr. Alok Kumar said there was no complaint about the incident.
