Encroachments: report sought by May 31

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: The district administration on Thursday signalled its intention to crack down on encroachments on Government land.

A meeting convened by District Collector N. Ayyappan here issued directions to Tahsildars to prepare and file a report on the encroachments in the four taluks in the district, namely Thiruvananthapuram, Nedumangad, Neyyatinkara and Chirayinkeezh.

Senior officials of the Revenue department were present at the meeting held at the Collectorate to discuss the intrusions on Government land at various places in the district.

The Tahsildars were asked to furnish the information they had already collected to the Collector by Saturday. The final and detailed report covering the encroachments in each village is to be submitted before May 31.

The meeting decided to prepare separate reports on the extent of encroachments in the tourist locations at Varkala, Kovalam, Ponmudi, Poovar and Veli. Reclamation and encroachment of water bodies including lakes and rivers will also be surveyed.

Mr. Ayyappan told the meeting that officials would have to face disciplinary action if they failed to report correctly.

"If subsequent surveys reveal encroachments that were not reported, it will be taken seriously," he warned them.

Revenue Divisional Officer K.V. Mohankumar, Tahsildars, Additional Tahsildars and Deputy Collectors participated in the meeting.
