The victim, Gargee
NEW DELHI: A software engineer has been arrested on charges of killing his engineer wife in his house at Dabri here earlier this month. The accused had allegedly tried to cover up the matter claiming that his wife had committed suicide. The murder took place on May 3 night when Gargee was hit and strangled allegedly by her husband Manoj Rai. In his statement to the police, Manoj claimed that on the fateful night he had a tiff with Gargee over selection of the television channel, following which she locked herself up in the bedroom. According to Manoj, he spent the night in another room. The next morning when she did not open the door, he called up his brother Dhiraj, a resident of Vikaspuri, and both of them broke open the door. Manoj claimed that he found his wife's body lying on the bed, while a "dupatta" was hanging from the ceiling suggesting that she had hanged herself. Gargee's father, who lives in Kolkata, arrived in Delhi and the body was cremated after post-mortem. Later, the father told senior police officers that the investigating officer of the case was trying to make him believe that his daughter had committed suicide. But the post-mortem report clearly showed that she had been hit and strangled. Gargee's relatives alleged that they had seen injury marks on her body before it was taken for post-mortem. They also alleged that the neighbours told them about frequent quarrels between Gagree and Manoj. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West Delhi) Ravinder Singh Yadav said on the basis of the post-mortem report, which came on Wednesday, a case of murder had been registered and Manoj was arrested. The police are now examining his brother's role in the case. Gargee had met Manoj when they worked in a Bangalore firm last year. They were married last July, after which Manoj joined a Gurgaon company. She also shifted to Delhi and they started living in the Nasirpur area of Dabri. She joined an advertising firm. Her father alleged that Gargee had taken a personal loan of about Rs. 2 lakh before marriage and had been repaying it through instalments, which was not liked by Manoj.
