CHENNAI: A host of projects of Chennai Metrowater to improve water supply and upgrade the sewerage system in the city, to be funded under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), is set to take off in the next few months.

Technical evaluation of the bids for projects aimed at improving the city's water distribution system is nearing completion. The projects, to be taken up in 12 packages, include rehabilitation of the water distribution stations and strengthening of the supply system.

A Metrowater official said 17 bids for upgradation of the stations at K.K. Nagar, Kilpauk, Southern Headworks and Anna Poonga are being evaluated. On completion of the process, the price bids would be invited. These works are expected to commence in three months. On Friday, Metrowater received bids for the rehabilitation of the conduit pipeline transporting raw water from Red Hills to Kilpauk Water Works. The improvement works on the over 300-km pipeline would benefit 20 lakh residents, he said.

The water agency also received four bids on Friday for a 54-million litre per day capacity sewerage treatment plant at Perungudi. The facility is estimated to cost Rs.31.80 crore.

Technical evaluation of 11 bids received for laying a 32-km pipeline to convey treated water from the upcoming Minjur desalination plant to Red Hills was in final stage. Nearly Rs.88 crore was sanctioned under the JNNURM. The project to provide water supply and sewerage facilities in the IT corridor is expected to get over in five months, the official said.
