Nakulan dies in Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram: Prominent Tamil-English writer T. K. Doraiswamy, popularly known as Nakulan, died in a hospital here on Thursday night. He was 84.

Born at Kumbakonam in 1921, Prof. Doraiswamy came to Thiruvananthapuram when he was 14. He completed his higher studies from Kerala and Annamalai Universities. He settled down here and taught English at Mar Ivanios College for over four decades.

He started writing in the 1960s in `Ezhuthu,' a little magazine founded by C.S. Chellappa.

He authored three collections of poems. Many of his creative works dealt with books and writers.

He made invaluable contributions to Tamil poetry, novels and short stories and is considered one of the stalwarts of modern Tamil poetry.

His novel `Ninaivupaadhai is said to be one of the milestones in Tamil literature. His prominent works include `Nizhalgal', `Naykal,' `Naveenan Diary,' `Ezhuthu kavithaikal,' `Iruneenda Kavithaikal', to name a few. His works in English include `Non-Being' and `A Tamil Writer's Journal'.

The funeral will be held on Saturday at 11.30 a.m at the Thycaud crematorium here.
