Officials at receiving end at DRDA meet

Staff Reporter

Officials told to get ready for approval of action plan before June 15

ELURU: The lack of preparedness by the official machinery dealing with rural development in West Godavari district was evident at the meeting of the Vigilance and Monitoring Committee of the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) on Saturday.

Officials Rural Water Supply, District Water Management Authority (DWAMA), District Panchayat Office and Housing departments fumbled when asked to explain about the flow of funds to their departments from different agencies and their activities. Local MP and Chairman of the committee Kavuri Sambhasiva Rao expressed his displeasure over the `information impoverishment' on the part of the higher-ups of some departments.

Job scheme

He pulled up C. Sridhar, Project Director, DRDA and Convener of the committee for his failure to submit the minutes and Action Taken Report pertaining to the decisions taken at the previous committee meeting. Pointing out that the Annual Action Plan for 2005-06 under the Sampoorna Grameena Rojgar Yojana (SGRY) scheme was approved on December 10, he observed that approval of the plan at the fag end of the financial year tended to lapse of funds. Besides, the grounding of schemes in the last minute would also give scope for misuse of funds, he added. He told the officials to get ready for approval of the current year action plan before June 15. The claim of Jyoti, Project Director, DWAMA on the `exemplary' work pertaining to land development under Indira Prabha done at Bhuttayagudem was put to test when the concerned Mandal Parishad president countered it. The committee chairman said he would make a field visit to ascertain facts.
