ONGOLE: Some 28,000 persons registered themselves for work under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) in Prakasam district.
`Boon to workers'
Zilla Parishad chairperson Katam Arunamma launched the programme at Paluru-Dondapadu villages in Kandukur mandal on Saturday. Addressing a meeting on the occasion, district Collector B. Udaya Lakshmi said that the programme would be a boon for workers as it would check migration in search of work. The district administration identified 435 works under the programme at an estimated cost of Rs. 20 crores. Job cards would be issued for registered persons whenever they seek employment. They would be shown work within 15 days of issuing job card or they would be paid unemployment allowance. Men and women would be paid equal wage. They would be paid wages either through bank account or post office account. Ayahs would be provided at places where more than five children of women workers need to be taken care of. The workers would be provided drinking water and medical aid at the place of work. Workers belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes would be paid wages of Rs. 80 per day if they undertake any development work in their own fields.
Kandukur MLA Manugunta Mahidhara Reddy stayed away from the programme on the pretext that he was not informed about the place of launching the programme till this morning.
