NEW DELHI: Angry scenes were witnessed outside the Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre Limited (EHIRCL) here on Saturday morning when relatives of patients under the treatment of the Institute's Executive Director and cardiologist, Naresh Trehan, shouted slogans and argued with hospital security for preventing the physician from entering the premises. This following an order issued by the EHIRCL management on Friday evening directing Dr. Trehan to "relinquish the post of Executive Director of the Institute to concentrate on his Medicity Business Venture."
"Powers terminated"
Addressing the media on Saturday, Managing Director of EHIRCL and Fortis Healthcare Limited, Shivinder Mohan Singh, said: "Dr. Trehan has been associated with Escorts Heart Institute for over 20 years. However, over the past 18 months, Dr. Trehan has been increasingly focussed on his personal project, the Medicity at Gurgaon. He has been asked to leave EHIRCL to concentrate on that venture. He continues to be a 10 per cent shareholder in EHIRCL. We have terminated Dr. Trehan's administrative powers and have asked him to give up his responsibilities. He ceases to be an Executive Director at any of the EHIRCL institutions. Dr. Trehan's rights to operate on patients have been withdrawn since Friday and he will be given `limited entry' till all the patients registered under him are treated."
Police deployed
The atmosphere at the hospital remained tense with over three-dozen police personnel deployed to prevent any untoward incident. Dr. Trehan on Saturday had a list of over 50 patients under his care, including over a dozen chronic patients.
