Barasat (WB) : JCT Mills of Phagwara, with 31 points, finished runner-up, defeating local giant East Bengal 3-2 in their last National Football League outing for the ONGC Cup at the Barasat Stadium here on Saturday. Mahindra United took the third position with 30 points from 18 matches. JCT shot into the lead in the fifth minute through its forward Chidi, who was later declared the man of the match. The lead was, however, short-lived as East Bengal drew level six minutes later through Ambani. JCT went ahead again in the 30th minute when Sunil Chhetri smartly headed home a Harish Sharma centre. Inspired with the lead, JCT sharpened its attack and Chidi struck again in the 34th minute, this time capitalising on a pass from Baljit with a snap shot. After the breather, East Bengal reduced the margin when striker Asim Biswas, following a pass from Nabi, disturbed the net from outside the box. East Bengal's search for an equaliser went in vain as JCT defence managed to repulse all its attacks.
Churchill fourth
At Margao, Churchill Brothers finished fourth, scoring an emphatic 4-1 win over Air India with George Ekeh and Odafe Okelie scoring a brace each at the Nehru Stadium. For the winner, Ekeh (26th, 80th) and Okelie (30th, 50th) moved the nets while Paresh Shivalkar reduced the margin for Air India in the 89th minute. With this win, Churchill Brothers finished with 29 points from 18 matches. Agencies
