Bina Ramani allowed to visit United States

NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Saturday allowed Bina Ramani, who is facing charges under the Indian Penal Code and the Excise Act and in whose restaurant model Jessica Lal was shot dead on April 30, 1999, to go to the United States.

Disposing of an application filed by Ms. Ramani on Friday, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kamini Lau allowed her to leave for the U.S. but only after she deposited Rs. 1 lakh as security with the court.

Ms. Ramani had told the court that she planned to leave for the U.S. on May 21 and return on August 6.

Demand to open mosques under ASI

NEW DELHI: Delhi Assembly Deputy Speaker Shoaib Iqbal has demanded that all mosques under the control of the Archaeological Survey of India be opened to members of the Muslim community to offer "namaaz".

In a statement, Mr. Iqbal said it was a longstanding demand of Muslims that they be allowed to offer "namaaz" at historic mosques of Delhi that are under the control of ASI. "It is shocking that on Fridays and other occasions Muslims have to offer `namaaz' on roads and parks as they are prevented from using mosques under ASI," he said.

Candlelight memorial programme

NEW DELHI: Over 400 people living with HIV/AIDS and a coalition of organisations will gather at Jantar Mantar here this Sunday to take part in a candlelight memorial programme dedicated to all those who have succumbed to the disease.

"The memorial is also an occasion to support those living with HIV/AIDS and a time for collective introspection and for a commitment to renew our efforts in fighting the challenges faced by people living with it,'' said an organiser. Public interest organisations have requested the Government to increase access to newer AIDS drugs at government treatment centres.

A music programme for Sunday

NEW DELHI: A music programme, "Open up your eyes", is being organised

at Café Turtle in Greater Kailash here this Sunday.

The concert is being organised in association with IID Association, a Chennai-based NGO working for under-privileged children. Full Circle Publishing owner Priyanka Malhotra said: "To speak for those who cannot speak for themselves is the thought behind this concert."
