With the mercury expected to shoot up further, leading to an increase in the demand for power, the department has sought release of 200 MW of power in advance from Damodar Valley Corporation.
"The Chief Minister has written to the Union Power Minister seeking release of 200 MW of power from the DVC six months before it was scheduled to be given
He said the city was supposed to get this 200 MW in October, but anticipating a rise in temperature, the Government has sought its early release.
"Consumption of power increases as the mercury shoots up. Recently, when the temperature touched 40 degree Celsius, the demand soared to an all time high
An additional bounty is also expected from the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board, which has decided to sell surplus power during the coming summer months.
Power distribution company North Delhi Power Limited (NDPL) has made a bid for purchasing power at the rate of Rs. 7.30 per unit. The State will sell 700 million units from May to September.
Delhi has also tied up with three other States to supply 1,157 MW of power between July and September. Of this, 750 MW will come from Madhya Pradesh, 134 MW in May and June from Himachal Pradesh, and 157 MW from Kerala.
"We are going to be in a fairly comfortable situation. Adequate arrangements have been made to provide power during the summer months," said Power Minister Haroon Yusuf.
