Jawans `gun down' father, son

Gurdaspur (Punjab): A father-son duo was shot dead allegedly by some BSF personnel when they objected to them consuming alcohol near his house, triggering protests from angry locals. All the four BSF personnel, who were in an inebriated condition, were arrested after the late night incident in Thakurpur village of this Punjab district, senior police officials told PTI.

According to police, the jawans entered into a heated argument with Shingara Singh, a farmer, when he allegedly objected to them consuming alcohol near his house. Following this, the jawans went back to the barracks and came back with a loaded rifle and opened fire at Mr. Singh. They also shot at his son Daljit Singh who came to rescue his father.

Both of them were rushed to the district civil hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival, the sources added. As the news spread, angry locals took to the streets and blocked the main Gurdaspur-Pathankot road for nearly three hours demanding the arrest of the BSF personnel. The four personnel were later arrested, SSP, Loknath Angra, said.- PTI
