Woman `beaten to death'

Gaya: A dalit woman was beaten to death by a former `mukhiya' (panchayat head) and his kin in Bihar's Gaya district on the suspicion that the lady plotted a theft, police said on Saturday.

The cow of the former mukhiya of Dhansir panchayat Saroj Singh got lost on Friday evening while grazing and he suspected the woman's (Kari) son of stealing it.

Saroj Singh along with his relatives Manoj Singh and Sanjay Singh reached Kari's house and ordered her to hand over her son who, according to the victim's family, does not live there.

As Kari pleaded her son's innocence, saying he was not living in the village, Saroj and others started raining blows and kicks on the hapless woman. She was shifted to the Magadh Medical College Hospital in a serious condition. She died on Saturday morning, police said.

Enraged over the incident, the locals blocked vehicular traffic at Sikaria linking Gaya with the pilgrim town of Bodh Gaya for several hours demanding immediate arrest of the attackers.

The former mukhiya and his two other associates are absconding.

An FIR has been lodged with the Medical College Police Station in connection with the incident, sources said. -- PTI
