BERHAMPUR: A racket to send girls from poor tribal families to metros by lure of good income was unearthed at Mohana in Gajapati district. Two women agents of the racket who were allegedly identifying and luring poor tribal girls were arrested by the Mohana police. The whole thing came to the fore when Inspector In-Charge of Mohana Police station, Ramchandra Thamba came across four minor girls roaming suspiciously near a hotel two days ago. Police rounded up these girls and interrogated them. The girls said they were on their way to some city to get appointed. Further investigation led to arrest of two women who were taking these girls outside the State from this tribal area. They were identified as Shayamali Singh of Kolkata and Sunita Mandal of Paradeep. They were found to be key persons in this racket. Since past one week these two women had reached Kaliapata village under Mohana block and had become close to villagers. They had identified some girls of poor tribal families. They had managed to get the girls to Mohana bus stand. While the parents of these girls were searching for them at the village they were on their way to be transported outside the State. The rescued minor girls, Basanti, Sebati, Balya and Namita have been handed over to their parents.
Investigation
Investigation is on to track down other links and local agents of this racket. The arrested women have been sent to R.Udaygiri jail as their bail was rejected by R.Udaygiri court on Friday. Similar rackets of luring minor girls from poor families to send them outside the state have also been unearthed in Ganjam district. Some girls were rescued by police from Digapahandi area recently.
