INCONVENIENCE: The damaged road at Devapuram in Bhavani. - Photo: M. Govarthan
ERODE: Bhavani Municipality supplies Cauvery water to the entire Bhavani town. But a street situated on the banks of the River Cauvery has no water supply as the administration is struggling to lay a pipeline in the area. More than 70 families live on Vellai Vinayagar Street in Devapuram (Ward 5). The Judicial Subordinate Court, BSNL office and its cellular and landline towers are situated on the street. According to the residents, the street lacks basic facilities. The residents say that they use bore well water for their needs as they do not get Cauvery water supply. Almost all of them buy packed water for drinking. Sewage from all the houses flows on the road. The road is in a deplorable condition causing inconvenience to pedestrians as well as vehicle users. The street is located opposite the taluk office and police station and is very close to the new bus stand. Above all, municipal vice-chairman Krishnaraj is representing the ward. After assuming office, when the residents told the councillor about the problems, he promised them to provide all facilities in a couple of months. Even after several months, nothing has been done, they say. According to the residents, the BSNL frequently digs the road to lay the Optic Fibre Cable. After closing the pits, the roads are not re-laid though the BSNL pays the charges for the same to the municipality. The municipal officials say because of the frequent digging by the BSNL, pipelines could not be laid to provide individual water connections to the residents. Mr. Krishnaraj said that estimates were already prepared for laying the road and while laying the road, a drainage would be constructed and water connections given.
