Handicraft, handloom expo

PUDUCHERRY: The handloom and handicrafts exhibition, organised by the Utkal Hastasilpa Society, at Rosema Thirumana Nilayam on the Lal Bahadhur Sastri Street (near Kamban Kalai Arangam) here offers visitors a range of products.

The 15-day exhibition, which began on May 12, displays traditional patchwork products of Orissa. Sunakar Lenka, Society manager, told The Hindu that men, women and children were engaged in this traditional craft.

Visitors can choose from an array of products displayed at stalls showcasing products from Kolkata, Tripura, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat.

Mr. Lenka said the purpose of conducting the fair (for the second time in Puducherry after last year) was to generate awareness of the culture of other States,particularly that of Orissa, among people of the Union Territory.

Mr. Lenka added that the Society would hold the fair in Karnataka next.

"We would like to organise the fair in different parts of the country, as patronage for the products should be generated nationwide," he said.

The fair also offers visitors eco-friendly products and cotton garments suitable for the summer.

Dress materials from Sambalpur, the `patta chitra' (painting of images on palm leaves) varieties, cane framing, jute bags, dress materials from Punjab, appliqué varieties from Orissa, kurtas from Jaipur, bamboo-based products from Tripura, products from Madurai and Kolkatta, deco painting of Kerala, handloom and handicrafts from Hyderabad and the Ghagar Chulai from Gujarat are available at the fair.
