SALEM: Overflowing sewage in Alagu Vinayagar Street and a few other streets in Alagapuram pose serious threat to human health. Wastewater overflows from the drains for the past two weeks in the area and the Salem Corporation authorities have not taken any steps to sort out the problem so far. Hundreds of residents in the area have to walk through stinking sewage stagnated on the streets. "We are facing a serious health threat as the sewage overflows constantly. The stench emanating from the stagnated wastewater has become unbearable and it envelops the entire area. The fly menace has assumed alarming proportion," residents point out. A solution to the problem seems to be distant as repeated pleas of the residents to authorities concerned fell on deaf ears. "Though we have informed the Corporation officials about the overflowing sewage, no sanitary worker has been sent to the area so far to remove the blocks in the drainage channels. We are forced to live under dismal sanitary conditions," a senior citizen in the area says. Almost all the channels in the area remain heavily silted. "The sanitary workers visit the area very rarely to take up cleaning operations," a woman resident points out. Similar problem exists in many residential areas in the city as the civic administration is yet to initiate concrete action to take up cleaning operations on a regular basis, residents say.
