Nagercoil: The Government has allotted Rs.30 crore for the implementation of an integrated drinking water project for Kanyakumari, said the Tourism Minister, N. Suresh Rajan. Presiding over a grievance day meeting on Saturday at Arumanallur panchayat union, the Minister said that the Government had been implementing various welfare and development schemes for the benefit of the poor and downtrodden with an intention to uplift their socio-economic status. A sum of Rs.5 lakh had also been allotted by the Government to erect electric fencing at Elaparai in Arumanallur panchayat to prevent the entry of wild animals in to the village. He also received more than 200 petitions regarding free house site pattas, old age pension, marriage assistance etc from the public. Earlier he visited the site, where the Mampazathuriaru dam was being constructed. The foundation stone for the implementation of this scheme was laid during the DMK regime (1999). Now the Government has allotted Rs14.80 crore for the execution of this project in a phased manner. Farmers belonging to various parts of the district could undertake agricultural operations on over 940 acre with the implementation of this project, the Minister said. As an initial allotment, the Government has sanctioned Rs.7 crore and the works would be completed with in one-and-a-half years, he said.
