TAMBARAM: Students of Sri Devkunwar Nanalal Bhatt Vaishnav Women's College in Chromepet have volunteered to help handloom weavers of Anakaputhur in their attempts to modernise, incorporate new designs and identify markets.

They will act as a bridge between weavers, the textile industry and government. A section of weavers in Anakaputhur, near Pallavaram, make fabric and finished products from natural fibres, including banana stem and jute.

At a function held on Saturday five students, in the presence of poet Kanimozhi, explained how they proposed to carry their efforts forward. The students have completed their first year at the College and are part of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), a campus initiative to promote entrepreneurship by Information Technology company Syntel. M.S.Sukanya, M.Jayashree, V. Gayathri, R. Sambu Mani Priya and S.Parkavi, said they read newspaper reports about the initiative of the weavers.

Commerce lecturer and faculty coordinator of SIFE at the college Kalaivani Murugan said they visited the weavers' hamlet and made detailed studies. Their objective was to identify the right buyers who would offer the best price.

College principal T. Sumithra said the students met the officials concerned and were instrumental in briefing Ms. Kanimozhi. Ms. Kanimozhi exhorted educated and motivated youth to enter politics. Sandra and Arpana Gangadharan of Syntel SIFE spoke of the organisation's activities.
