Protest march by Sikhs

Staff Reporter

Legal action against Dera Sacha Sauda chief sought

  • The demonstration also saw the participation of religious heads of various faiths
  • `Sikhism shows respect to all religions and thus any attempt to dishonour Sikh Gurus is deplorable'

NEW DELHI: A large number of Sikhs took out a protest march from Bangla Sahib Gurdwara to Jantar Mantar here on Sunday to seek legal action against Dera Sacha Sauda chief Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh for committing an alleged act of blasphemy and showing disrespect to Guru Gobind Singh.

The protesters, including women and children, held black flags and carried placards seeking action against Baba Gurmeet Singh. Many of them even brandished naked swords.

The protest march, organised by the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (SGMC), also saw the participation of religious heads of various faiths who later addressed the gathering on Parliament Street.

Delhi SGMC president Paramjit Singh Sarna said: "Dera chief Gurmeet Singh had shown disrespect not just to Sikhism, but had also earlier dishonoured holy symbols of other religions. We demand that the Union Government and the Punjab and Haryana Governments take action against him as per the law of the land and also seal Dera Sacha Sauda. India has been a land of confluence of hundreds of religions and sects but no one ever showed disrespect to other faiths."

Calling upon the youth to show restraint, Mr. Sarna said the Sikh community would need their zeal and energy if the Government failed to meet their demands in the next two days.

Federation of Indian Religions Secretary General Satnam Singh Uppal said Sikhism showed respect to all religions and thus any attempt to dishonour Sikh Gurus was deplorable.

Sensing the sentiments of anger and resentment among the protesters, social worker Swami Agnivesh said: "A Central Bureau of Investigation probe against Baba Gurmeet Singh is already underway and it is just a matter of time before the truth will come out. A Sikh need not wield his sword to kill a mosquito, it is to be wielded for a noble cause. He has already died a spiritual and religious death when he tried to emulate Guru Gobind Singh."
