Hospital dedicated to rural poor

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The M.V.J. Medical College and Research Hospital rolled out its first batch of graduates on Saturday. This occasion doubled as an event to dedicate this private hospital to the rural poor. Governor T.N. Chaturvedi unveiled the statue of M.V. Jayaraman, a doctor whose vision it was to see the hospital function.

The rural poor can now avail themselves of the hospital's many facilities, most of which will be provided free. Medical treatment will now be ensured at subsidised prices. "This institution is remarkable. It serves to help the disadvantaged and the unprivileged sections of society in rural India," said the Governor.

The hospital and college, built over 26.5 acres of land, will cater to more than 450 villages in a radius of 25 km. Manipal Health Systems Chief Executive Officer, R. Basil, who was the guest of honour, said 80 per cent of the hospital beds in the country were in urban areas.

V.S. Acharya, Minister for Medical Education, released the first issue of the "Medical Voice Journal", the in-house magazine of hospital-college, which is affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Health Sciences.
