Leaders pay homage to Rajiv Gandhi

HOMAGE: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, PCC leader P. Shanmugham (left) and Speaker R. Radhakrishnan pay homage at the statue of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on the occasion of the assassinated leader's 16th death anniversary in Puducherry on Monday.

Puducherry: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy paid homage at the statue of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi at the Thattanchavady Junction here on Monday to observe the 16th death anniversary of the former Prime Minister.

Speaker R. Radhakrishnan, PCC leader P. Shanmugham, former Speaker M.D.R. Ramachandran and legislators of the ruling Congress accompanied him to pay floral tributes at the statue.

Puducherry Municipal Council Chairperson B. Sridevi (Dravida Munnetra Khazhagam), Oulgaret Municipal Council Chairman N.S.J. Jayabal (Congress), councillors, PCC general secretary A. Gandhiraj and host of party functionaries, Inspector General of Police Kishan Kumar, Deputy Inspector General S. Vasudeva Rao and Secretaries to the Administration T.M. Balakrishnan and A. Anbarasu also present at the venue.

Representatives of the Hindu, the Islamic and the Christian religions read out excerpts from their respective religious books. Students of the Jawahar Bal Bhavan sang hymns and patriotic songs.

The Chief Minister later read out the "anti terrorism" pledge.

Earlier, PCC president P. Shanmugham, the Chief Minister and others paid floral tributes at the portrait of Rajiv Gandhi at the party office.

Mr. Shanmugham said that Rajiv Gandhi, like his predecessors, had a special care and concern for the development of the Union Territory. It was only when Rajiv Gandhi as Prime Minister intervened could the Anglo French Textile Mills here, which was sinking, was salvaged. He also said that the policies of the Congress were aimed at eradicating poverty.

Volunteers of different wings of the Puducherry Munnetra Congress paid homage at the portrait of Rajiv Gandhi on the party premises.

The Kattabomman Youth Welfare Association at Ariyankuppam also observed the day.
