Savarkar's book released
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE:
Bharathi Tirtha Mahaswamji of Sringeri Sharada Math said on Monday that it was unfortunate that the revolt by Indian soldiers in 1857 was being dismissed as a mutiny and was not getting the importance it deserved.
Releasing the Kannada translation of the late Savarkar's book "1857-Indian War of Independence", the seer said school textbooks referred to the mutiny as if it were an isolated incident and failed to recognise the sufferings of the Indians that led to the mutiny.
The role the mutiny played in awakening the masses had also been forgotten, the swamiji added.
Terming Savarkar's book as an "honest literary work", the seer said it provided factual details of all the events of the 1857 freedom struggle.
Earlier, the former Minister, Haranahalli Ramaswamy, said history should be written as it occurred and facts should not be hidden.
Mr. Ramaswamy regretted that some writers were trying to twist history and distort it.
