Reliance Communications slashes roaming rates

Special Correspondent

  • The company has 30 million customers
  • Hopeful of expanding market share

CHENNAI: In a move to bring more customers on its bandwagon in a highly competitive telecom market, Reliance Communications has turned its focus on making roaming affordable by slashing the tariff.

It has slashed roaming rates by as much as 70 per cent, bringing huge relief to frequently travelling mobile phone users.

In the post-paid India One Rs.1,100 RCV (rechargeable vouchers) Plan, the rate for all incoming calls while roaming has been reduced to Re.1 from Rs.1.75 per minute. In the pre-paid category, the rate for all incoming calls while roaming is cut to 40 paise per minute. For the 520 RCV Plan, all calls will be charged at Rs.1.20 per minute. For the 770 RCV Plan, all local calls will be charged at 80 paise per minute and inter-circle calls at Rs.1.20 per minute. The fresh rate cut comes close on the heels of a reduction effected in February last.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, S. P. Shukla, President (Personal Business), Reliance Communications, said his company offered natural roaming advantage to mobile phone customers. The pan-India network offering, data roaming possibility, anywhere recharge facility and multi-lingual call centre — all these had stood Reliance in good stead. Mr. Shukla said Reliance's moves were aimed at making it affordable for anybody who had gone mobile to stay mobile.

To a question, Mr. Shukla said Reliance had 30 million plus customers at the last count. He was confident that the roaming rate reduction would bring in more customers. Reliance would make up the revenue loss (caused by rate reduction) by adding more clients, he added.
