Grills recovered

MYSORE: The city police on Monday arrested a person who was found in possession of cast iron grills that were reportedly stolen from the public offices around the Palace recently. The police constables observed an autorickshaw with goods and stopped the vehicle to ascertain the contents. The passenger, who was later identified as Mahboob Pasha, panicked reinforcing the suspicion of the police who immediately took him into custody. Pasha confessed of stealing the iron grills installed around CADA and other public offices.

These grills were erected during the time of the Maharaja. The value of the grills was estimated to be about Rs. 48,000. — Special Correspondent

Environment day

MYSORE: Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, here, will organise Environment Day celebrations on June 5 to create awareness on wildlife and environment. The zoo proposes to have a series of competitions, including drawing and painting for the physically challenged and special group children studying in various categories, planting of saplings, and programmes for government girls schools. For registration contact the zoo before May 31.

MYSORE: The Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) Employees' House Building Cooperative Society here distributed site documents to the members of the society. Former Director of CFTRI, B.L. Amla was the chief guest and president of the society Y.N. Vijayshankar was present. Applications invited

MYSORE: Akhila Karnataka Maratha Sangha has invited applications from the economically backward section students belonging to the Maratha community for admission to its hostel. Students belonging to the community and studying in different colleges in the city may apply for accommodation which is free of cost. CBSE results today

BANGALORE: Ending the anxious wait of thousands of students, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will announce the results of its Class XII examination for the Chennai and Ajmer regions at 8 a.m. on Wednesday. All schools in Bangalore and Karnataka fall under the Chennai region. With the results delayed, hundreds of CBSE students were worried that they will not be included in the Common Entrance Test (CET) rank list to be published by the CET Cell on May 25. Pre-University Department Commissioner and the CET Cell Commissioner, S.G. Hegde has now assured them that the CBSE students will be included in the list if the marks statements were submitted by Wednesday evening. — Staff Reporter

Court notice to Minister for Sugar

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday ordered issue of notice to Minister of Sugar and Rural Water Supply S.A. Ravindranath on a petition alleging misuse of development funds for Davangere district.

The petitioner, N.C. Puttaswamy, alleged that the Minister who was in charge of Davangere district was in the know of the misuse of funds. He said the Department of Urban Development had set aside Rs. 5 crore for development of Davangere city and municipalities in the district. However, these funds had not been properly utilised.

The court ordered issue of notices to the State, the Minister, and other respondents. It adjourned the case after asking the Government advocate to procure the records and place it before the court.

Protest for issue of ration cards

Kolar: Hundreds of activists of various associations under the banner of Joint Forum of Progressive Organisations launched a three-day protest in front of the tahsildar's office here on Tuesday demanding issue of ration cards to the poor and abolishing the unit system in the public distribution system.

A large number of women and youth from different villages stormed the tahsildar's office and stalled the work there. Later, they sat in a dharna in front of the office.

Members of KPRS, DYFI, CITU, JMS and Anganwadi Workers' Union are taking part in the protest. — Staff Correspondent

Supplementary exam.hall tickets despatched

Bangalore: Admission tickets of students who are appearing for SSLC supplementary examination, to be conducted later this month have been despatched to all Block Education Officers (BEOs).

According to a release, heads of departments will have to obtain them from the BEOs. — Special Correspondent

`Harassment' by police decried

Kolar: Scores of autorickshaw drivers staged a demonstration in front of town police station here on Tuesday against the alleged harassment by the police. Despite showing all the documents the police were imposing fines on them, the driers charged.

The drivers gathered in front of the station and raised slogans against the police. — Staff Correspondent

Conference

BANGALORE: The Credit Card Holders Association will hold a conference on May 28 to discuss issues pertaining to high interest rates and recovery methods adopted by credit card companies and on the manner in which companies could be made into following guidelines set by the Reserve Bank of India.

Announcing this at a press conference on Tuesday, general secretary of the association C.V. Gidappa said, "The credit card companies are levying hidden charges without even informing the customer about the terms and conditions. This is unfair." — Staff Reporter

Fishermen protest

Sirsi: Hundreds of fishermen held a protest march and submitted a memorandum to Karwar tahsildar opposing the construction of sea wall on Monday.

The fishermen said they would not be able to venture into the sea if the boulders were dumped along the sea. The district administration was preparing to build protective wall to protect the municipal garden as well as the Chapal warship Museum, which faced threat of sea erosion. — Correspondent

SIRSI: The State Third Finance Commission will submit its report by December 2007. The report will be submitted after touring all districts and eliciting the opinion of the panchayat members and non-governmental organisations said the commissions president A.G. Kodgi. — Correspondent

SIRSI: "Janamadhayama" editor Jayaram Hegde,

Journalist, Raghavendra Bettakoppa have won Karnataka Union of Working Journalists for 2007 from Uttara Kannada District. Mr. Hegde has won the Kidi Sheshappa Award for his lifetime achievement. Mr. Betakoppa has won the M.C. Varghese Award, according to a release by G. Subraya Bhat, president of Uttara Kannada District Union of Working Journalists, Sirsi.

Man killed in road accident

Sirsi: Fisal Habib Siddi Bhasha Sukkumb was killed and seven others were injured when a car and tanker collided near Anantwadi in national highway in Monki police station limits in Honnavar taluk on the night of Monday. The injured have been admitted to the R.N. Shetty Hospital in Murudeshwar.

DHARWAD: There will be no power supply in the following areas of Dharwad and surrounding areas on Wednesday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on account of urgent repair works, Hubli Electricity Supply Company (HESCOM) has said in a release. The areas to be affected are Nigadi, Mugad, Jayanagar, Pavate Nagar, Sadhanakeri, Basaveshwara Nagar, KCD Malmaddi, Station Road, DC Compound and surrounding areas. — Staff Correspondent

HUBLI: Owing to emergency repair works at Aminbhavi Water Treatment Plant, water supply in parts of ward numbers 43, 44 and all parts of wards 45, 55, 56, 57, 58 and 59 had been delayed by a day. 78 power theft cases detected

Bangalore: Vigilance staff of the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company conducted a mass drive against theft of electricity in Chowdenahalli, Priyankanagar, Bhovi Colony and Ambedkar Colony in the Indiranagar Vigilance police station limits on May 22 and detected 78 cases of electricity theft. According to a press release, cases were booked under Section 135 of The Electricity Act against the offenders.

Bank relaunches scheme

BANGALORE: Union Bank of India has repackaged its Union Classic Current Account and relaunched it with a wide range of concessions and services to customers.

The Deputy General Manager (Bangalore Region) of the bank, G.R. Lawhale, told reporters here on Tuesday that customers would get the benefits based on maintaining an average monthly balance varying from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 10 lakh.
