MEG wins tournament

Periakulam: Madras Engineering Group and Centre, Bangalore lifted the P.D. Chidambara Sourya Narayanan Memorial Trophy defeating Tamil Nadu Basketball Association 73-56 in the last match of the summit league in the 48th annual all-India basketball tournament, organised by Silver Jubilee Sports Club at PSD Courts, Periyakulam, on Monday.

MEG emerged winner with an all-win record and TNBA finished runner-up losing only to MEG.

Fr MEG, Sweeto Francis was in fine nick with his accurate shooting and Peter John, who was aggressive and sharp in earlier matches, proved a pillar of strength under the boards, as well as chipping in with scoring. Tinu Joseph and Prasanth gave them good support.

On the other hand, TNBA, favourite of the crowd, did well at the start but faded away as the game progressed. MEG had only a 4-point (21-17) lead at the end of the first quarter. But in the second, the sappers accelerated the scoring. They built up a 19-point (44-25) lead at the interval. Though TNBA strove to make a fight of it in the third and fourth quarters, the best they could do was cut the lead to 11 points at one stage, before finally succumbing at 56-73.

Theni District Collector Har Sahai Meena presided and Revenue Minister I. Periasamy gave away the prizes.

Special Awards: Sridhar (MEG); Suresh Kumar (TNBA); Rajesh (Indian Army); Sanjay (AOC); Promising Youngster: P.C. Babu (AOC); Player of the tournament: Sweeto Francis (MEG); Best-disciplined team: South East Central Railway, Bilaspur.

The results: MEG, Bangalore 73 (Sweeto Francis 24, Peter John 21) bt Tamil Nadu Basketball Association 56 (John de Plato 18).

Police prevails

At Kovilpatti, Tamil Nadu Police prevailed over Central Excise, Chennai 4-3 via sudden death to make the last-eight grade in the second annual K.N. Subbaraj Memorial Trophy all-India hockey tournament at G.K. Stadium, on Tuesday.

At the end of regulation time, the teams were locked goalless. In the tie-breaker Srinivasan, Krishna Kumar and Palanivelu scored for Tamil Nadu Police and Mervin, Nirmal and Ravi Kumar scored for Central Excise.

In the sudden death, Palanivelu scored for Police, whereas Ravi Kumar failed.

In another match, South Central Railway, Secunderabad coasted to a 7-1 victory over host Rajiv Gandhi Hockey Club and entered the quarterfinals. SCR toyed with the host from the start and scored at will.

Hameed (7th, 41st), Gurpreet (10th), Bipin (12th), Iyyappa (33rd), Asheem (45th) and Chengappa (49th) scored for Railway. The only goal for the host was scored by Guru (21st).

TTFC in last eight

At Kayalpatnam, Track Trotters Football Club, Ahmedabad entered the quarterfinals of the 42nd Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Memorial Trophy all-India football tournament defeating Young Challengers Football Club, Kozhikode 3-2 at USC ground on Tuesday.

Track Trotters scored all the three goals within 17 minutes before the Kozhikode team settled down. Deesh opened the account in the second minute with a terrific right-footer from near the top of the box. Sivinraj scored the second off a pass from Prakash in the 11th minute and Gresious netted in the 17th minute for a 3-0 lead for the Trotters.

Undaunted by these reverses, Young Challengers fought back strongly and went down fighting. It reduced the margin in the 21st minute, when Sherfuddin scored. Sherfuddin scored again in the 50th minute with a long-range shot. Towards the end Young Challengers team attacked strongly to get the equaliser and it nearly got it a minute from close. Anis sent a powerful shot off a cross from Shahjahan but the ball just went over the cross bar.

Chakola Jr. excels

Asian Games silver medallist Joseph J. Chakola Jr., with a 142 gross, emerged the open champion of the Dunlop Trophy golf tournament at the Ootacamund Gymkhana Club recently.

V. Ramaswamy of Coonoor with a net score of 133 finished on top in the handicap category.

The results: Open: 1. Joseph J. Chakola Jr. 142, 2. N. Mageshwaran 145. Handicap: 1. V. Ramaswamy 133, 2. P. Suresh 135.

South India open golf: The South India open golf championship will be held at the Ootacamund Gymkhana Club course in Udhagamandalam from May 23 to 26.
