Soumyadeep, Shubhajit in main draw

New Delhi: Soumyadeep Roy and Shubhajit Saha won their respective preliminary qualification rounds to join national champion Achanta Sharath Kamal in the singles main draw of the table tennis World Championship in Zagreb, Croatia.

Saha was made to sweat by Ayman Makanay of Jordan but he kept his cool to carve out a 11-5, 11-6, 10-12, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9 win. He will take on Min Yang of Italy in the first round of main draw.

Soumyadeep, comparatively, had an easy match and quelled the challenge of Adrien Mattenet of France 14-12, 11-7, 11-5, 10-12, 11-4. He will meet Christophe Legout of France in the main draw.

India's top paddler Sharath Kamal, who has got a direct entry because of his under-100 rankings, will be up against Poland's Lucjan Blaszczyk.

Indian women paddlers Poulomi Ghatak and Mouma Das showed fine form to win the first stage of their qualifying matches

Ghatak impressed by drubbing both her opponents. She first beat Samira Maal of Russia 11-5, 11-5, 11-8, 11-3 before thrashing Jordan's Hadeel Mazen Awwad 11-5, 11-3, 11-5, 11-3.

Mouma got the better of Lara Kadjabachian of Libya 11-3, 11-5, 11-8, 12-10 and Giyasova Khayala of Azerbaijan 11-6, 12-10, 7-11, 11-4, 11-7.

Kumaresan Shamini and Kasturi Chakraborty, however, could win only one of the two qualification matches, while Soumi Mondal won only one of her three group matches.

In the women's doubles, Mouma and Poulomi will play the Spanish pair of Galia Dvorak and Sara Ramirez in the first round.

In mixed doubles, Sharath and Poulomi will play Xin Xu and Yan Guo of China, while Soumyadeep and Mouma will take on Peng-Lung Chiang and Yun-Feng Lu of Taiwan. — PTI
