Unas surprises Jagadeesh

KOCHI: A third-round clash between two seasoned coaches, Ernakulams' K.A. Unas and Kozhikode's A.K. Jagadeesh, produced the day's notable upset in the Airtel Kerala State senior chess championship at the Rajiv Gandhi indoor Stadium here on Tuesday evening.

Unas, the 18th seed, found a tempting opening in the 20th move and shocked the seventh-seeded Jagadeesh eight moves later. In the second board, Ernakulam's two former State champions — second-seeded M.B. Muraleedharan and ninth-seeded U.C. Mohanan — settled for a draw after 21 moves.

The results: Third round: N.T. Suresh Kumar (Idk, 2) lost to O.T. Anilkumar (Kzd, 3), M.B. Muraleedharan (Ekm, 2.5) drew with U.C. Mohanan (Ekm, 2.5), K.V. Devadasan (Knr, 2) lost to K. Alex Thomas (Wyd, 3), P.V. Gireesh (3) bt V. Rajith (Tvm, 2), P.K. Suresh (Tsr, 2.5) drew with M.A. Joy Lazar (Tsr, 2.5), U.S. Satheesan (Ekm, 2.5) drew with Binju Oommen (Pta, 2.5), K.A. Unas (Ekm, 3) bt A.K. Jagadeesh (Kzd, 2), N. Abdul Majeed (Kzd, 2.5) drew with K.R. Madhusoodanan (Kzd, 2.5), Mohammed Dhilshad (Kzd, 3) bt Pran Kumar (Klm, 1.5), P.S. Ameer (Ekm, 1.5) lost to P.K. Arjun (Wyd, 2.5).
