THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government would constitute the Kerala Police Complaints Authority meant to deal with complaints relating to the police and police atrocities this week, Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said here on Tuesday. Participating in a meet-the-press organised by the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club, Mr. Balakrishnan said the Authority and the Police Security Commission, to deal with transfers and postings and other service and welfare issues concerning police personnel, were being formed in pursuance of the amendments to the Kerala Police Act as directed by the Supreme Court. The Government had already divided maintenance of law and order and crime investigation into two separate streams and soon there would be special investigation teams in select police stations, he said. He said the Government would extend the eight-hour duty for police personnel to 17 more police stations soon. At present, the eight-hour duty norm was in operation in 17 stations.
Computerisation
The coming few months would also see 136 police stations in Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Thrissur and Kannur districts getting computerised in addition to the 101 already computerised ones. A new Central Prison would be set up in Pathanamthitta and a Fire Force Academy would come into being in Thrissur. Community policing would be extended to more cities and municipalities in pursuit of the objective of making police personnel `public servants.' Taking into account the manpower shortage in the police force, the Director General of Police had been asked to issue orders sanctioning full strength staff in all police stations. The department was also working towards provision of quarters to all police personnel and to upgrade the facilities in the Armed Reserve Police camps.
