Chikkarangappa in lead

BANGALORE: Last week, Chikkarangappa, the Eagleton-based junior golfer played impressively at the Asia Pacific junior championship at Hong Kong to finish second. On Tuesday at his home course near Bidadi, Chikka blazed the greens to lead in two sections (`A' & `B') in the Indian Golf Union junior circuit tournament. He had a card of four-under 68 to lead by four strokes over Amanjyot Singh and Pritham Haridas, both of whom had cards of level par 72.

Chikka opened in style logging back-to-back birdies on the first two holes. He followed up with birdies on the sixth, 11th, 14th, 15th and 17th to finish with seven birdies for the first round. All his dropped shots came on the first nine holes with bogeys on the fifth, seventh and eighth.

The results: First round: Category `A' (15-17 years): 1. Chikkarangappa (68); T2. Amanjoyot Singh and Pritham Haridas (72 each); T4 Bhanu Pratap Singh and Rommel Majumdar (74 each); T6 Vicky Sharma, Rashid Khan, Khalin Joshi and Kanishk Madan (76 each); T10. Saurabh Bhadury and Trishul Chinnappa (77 each).

Category `B' (13 -14 years): 1. Chikkarangappa (68); 2. Rommel Majumdar (74); 3. Khalin Joshi (76); 4. Trishul Chinappa (77); 5. Hemendra Choudhary (78); 6. Anish Gupta (80).

Category `C' (11-12 years): 1. Rahul Ravi (76); 2. Akash Srinivasan (84); 3. Yashas Chandra (85); T4. Vashist Pawar and Kelly Rao (86 each); T6. Asad Khan, Roshan Raj and Akshath Vidyanath.
