Violence in parts of J&K

Luv Puri

Jammu : A strike called by the Akal Takht to protest against the alleged disrespect to Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Sikh Guru, by Dera Sacha Sauda chief Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh resulted in a complete shutdown in Jammu and Kashmir. There were reports of violence in some parts of the State.

Shops and business establishments in the city and its suburbs, including Samba, Simbal Camp and Ranbir Singh Pura, were closed and vehicles were off the roads. The University campus was open, though the attendance was thin.

In the morning, Sikh youths enforced the strike by burning tyres and blocking roads. There were protest demonstrations at several places. Vaishno Devi pilgrims were the worst-hit.

According to a local new agency, youths smashed the window panes of a few Government buildings in the border district of Poonch. Protesters raised slogans against the Dera chief.
