BJP seeks peace in Punjab

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI : Bharatiya Janata Party president Rajnath Singh on Tuesday asked the Parkash Singh Badal Government to ensure that peace was maintained at all costs in Punjab.

Talking to presspersons here, Mr. Singh said: ``I have spoken twice to the Punjab Chief Minister over phone and asked him to ensure that the Tuesday bandh should be peaceful at any cost. We are keen that there is no untoward incident during the bandh and every measure taken to contain violence, if any,'' he added.

However, he refused to take any further questions on Dera issue in Punjab where BJP is a coalition partner in the Badal Government. Mr. Singh's comments come close on the heels of a warning issued by the State BJP to the Government that at no cost should anybody be allowed to take law into his own hands.

The bandh call follows stand-off between Dera Sacha Sauda chief and Akal Takht and the Punjab Chief Minister.
