Chile beats USA

DUSSELDORF: The United States lost 2-1 to Chile in a Red Group match at the World Team Cup on Monday when James Blake and Mardy Fish were both beaten in singles.

Fernando Gonzalez defeated Blake 6-4, 7-5 while Nicolas Massu beat Fish 6-4, 7-6(1) in the round-robin clay-court event. The top-ranked doubles team of Bob and Mike Bryan gave the United States its only point with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jorge Aguilar and Julio Peralta.

In the Blue Group matches, the Czech Republic defeated Spain 2-1.

The results:

Red Group: Chile bt United States 2-1 (Fernando Gonzalez bt James Blake 6-4, 7-5; Nicolas Massu bt Mardy Fish 6-4, 7-6(1); Jorge Aguilar & Julio Peralta lost to Bob Bryan & Mike Bryan 1-6, 2-6.

Blue Group: Czech Republic bt Spain 2-1 (Tomas Berdych lost to David Ferrer 1-6, 3-6; Jan Hajek bt Bartolome Salva-Vidal 6-4, 6-2; Martin Damm & Tomas Berdych bt David Ferrer & Bartolome Salva-Vidal 5-7, 6-3, 10-8. — AP
