HYDERABAD: The Human Rights Forum has decided to take its campaign against the allotment of vast tracts of land to special economic zones (SEZs) to the village level. The forum is planning a series of programmes, including short skits and plays, for creating awareness among people about the violation of human rights in the name of the SEZs, HRF general secretary K. Balagopal said. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, he said large-scale displacement of poor and marginal sections was becoming a major issue of concern. The current paradigm of development was the one that was aimed at denying Dalits, weaker sections and minorities their rights.
Issues
The Forum would deliberate on the issues at its two-day State committee conference being organised in Srikakulam on May 26 and 27 and finalise the future course of action. Several noted people, including Aruna Roy, one of the architects of Right to Information Act would deliver lectures on relevant topics like governance and democracy as part of the meeting. Referring to other issues, Mr. Balagopal said the fact-finding committee constituted by the Forum found that police firing on the agitated mobs in the old city following the bomb blast in Mecca Masjid was "unwarranted." Transfer of police officials involved would not serve the purpose and the Government should prosecute the officials responsible for the loss of life in the firing.
