TDP leaders' differences out in the open

Staff Reporter

KARIMNAGAR: Two groups of Telugu Desam Party members — one owing allegiance to former Minister M. Damodar Reddy and the other supporting party convenor L. Ramana — came to blows and hurled chairs against each other at a meeting here on Tuesday.

The differences between the two leaders came to the fore at the party elections, in the presence of observers — former Hyderabad Mayor Teegala Krishna Reddy and Adilabad Zilla Parishad chairman Ramesh Rathod — here on Tuesday.

Collection of opinion

Trouble started when the observers were engaged in collection of opinion. While some of the leaders present suggested Mr. Ramana's name for district president, others came up with Mr. Damodar Reddy's name. When the latter's supporters flashed the victory sign and waved to the crowds, the former's group raised their voice in dissent.

Order restored

Even as the observers appealed for order, the two groups clashed with each other. Some order was restored only when both Mr. Ramana and Mr. Damodar Reddy came onto the dais and threatened to withdraw from the contest if the agitated partymen did not remain quiet.

The observers said they would inform the high command about the developments in Karimnagar and then wait for a decision on the appointment of president and other members of the district unit.
