`Ranga Kishora' to tour four districts

  • `Ranga Kishora' will visit government schools and stage plays
  • About 100 plays are expected to be staged

    DHARWAD: The activities of "Ranga Kishora", a theatre group of Rangayana, will be extended to the four districts of Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag and Bagalkot.

    Director of Rangayana, Mysore, Chidambararao Jambe, said this during his visit on Monday to the Basavaraj Rajaguru Amphhitheatre, which is being renovated to suit the requirements of the Rangayana.

    He said Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) was funding theatre education in schools through International Theatre Institute. Along with Rangayana in Mysore, another theatre group from Kolkata had been selected for the programme, which began three years ago, he said.

    Mr. Jambe said the now the programme was being extended by two years and the approval for extending the programme to four more districts had been obtained. Under the programme, a troupe would be visiting government schools, enact plays and interact with the schoolchildren as a step towards promoting theatre activities.

    He said all the taluks in these four districts would be covered. under the programme and nearly 100 shows were expected to be staged. Along with that five-day theatre workshops for the teachers would be staged at the district headquarters, he said.

    Mr. Jambe said the programme would be launched after the Rangayana unit at Dharwad took shape, which was likely to take two more months.

    Writer Siddhalinga Pattanashetty, theatre artiste Basalingaiah Hiremath , and Visheshwari Hiremath , B.I. Iligera, Anil Desai, K. Jaguchandra, Prakash Garud, and Assistant Director of Department of Kannada and Culture K.H. Chennur were present.
