CONCERN: State Women's Commission head Pramila Nesargi speaking to a victim of an acid attack at the Civil Hospital in Bijapour on Tuesday.
BIJAPUR: Pramila Nesargi, Chairperson of the State Women's Commission, has advocated capital punishment for those found guilty in acid attack cases. She was speaking to presspersons after calling on Sarojini Kalebag and her sister Sunanda, who were attacked with acid, at the Civil Hospital here on Tuesday. Last week, accused Devanand Pattar committed the offence after Sarojini reportedly rejected his advances. Voicing concern over increasing incidents of acid attacks against women, Ms. Nesargi said a stringent law should be formulated with death penalty for the offenders to prevent such incidents. Referring to the victims' demand that they be given government job besides corrective treatment, Ms. Nesargi said she would recommend to the Government to consider their request. As Ms. Kalebag suffered 35 per cent burns she needed plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery to minimise disfigurement of the face and body. At least Rs. 1.5 lakh was needed for the treatment. Ms. Nesatgi said she would ask the Government to bear the entire cost besides sanctioning other benefits according to the norms.
