MLA, municipal chairman clean roads in TP Gudem

Staff Reporter

Sequel to deteriorating sanitation

  • A large number of volunteers swing into action
  • Strike hits sanitation in all towns of the district

TADEPALLIGUDEM: Congress local MLA Kottu Satyanarayana and Tadepalligudem municipal chairman adopted a novel approach by holding broomsticks and sweeping the roads in the town to rope in non-governmental organisations and civil organisations for upkeep of sanitation, which was in a bad shape due to the indefinite strike launched by municipal employees.

Moved by the mounds of garbage and the stinking drains clogged with empty coconut shells, the first citizen of the town and the MLA launched a sanitation drive by voluntarily cleaning the KN road and the Main Road in the town.

    The response was overwhelming.

A large number of volunteers from several organisations including Satya Sai Samithi, Kavuri Foundation and Bramhakumari Eswariya Viswa Vidyalayam swung into action.

A battery of volunteers cleaned the Main Road from the overbridge to Kotibomma Centre for a stretch of 2 km. As a result, the situation pertaining to sanitation in the town kept improving as the drive launched on Monday and Tuesday yielded results.

It may be recalled that sanitation in all the eight municipal towns in West Godavari district is in bad shape for several days as the attempts by the municipal authorities to hire private workers to attend sanitation duties were thwarted by strikers.

    Traders warned

Meanwhile, Tadepalligudem municipal commissioner Nagabhushanam took a serious view of the condition of the drainage channel near taluq office.

The drainage, choked with empty tender coconut shells and the other wastes, produces stink and becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

He warned that a fine of Rs 500 would be imposed on the traders on either side of the drain who were found responsible for not properly using the channel.
