UPA fails on all fronts: TDP

`Package to prevent farmers' suicide has no impact'

VIZIANAGARAM: TDP Polit Bureau member and Rajya Sabha member Ravula Chandrasekhara Reddy has said that the economic and foreign policies have received a setback due to "lopsided policies" of the UPA Government.

Addressing party workers here on Tuesday, Mr. Reddy, who came here as party poll observer, said during the last three years, unemployment had increased, prices of essential commodities soared and the Special Economic Zones planned deteriorated law and order.

Foodgrains' import

The farm package announced by Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh failed to prevent hundreds of farmers committing suicide in the Vidarbha region, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and in other states. The foodgrains, which recorded a surplus during the NDA regime, were now being imported from other nations, Mr. Reddy said.

At least, 55 lakh metric tonnes of wheat was so far imported and a decision to import 15 lakh MT of pulses was already taken, he added.

On the foreign policy, Mr. Reddy said that the relations with Pakistan, Bangladesh and Iran strained due to the Centre's policies. He said that the Congress received a drubbing in the UP elections and 170 of its candidates had lost deposits despite campaigning by Rahul Gandhi, MP. Even in UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi's Raebareli constituency, an independent won by a huge margin, he said, and added that the party was weak in every State except in Andhra Pradesh.

`Target 2009 polls'

Party State general secretary Mullapudi Renuka asked the elected committees to be ready for election-2009 and launch movements against anti-people policies of the government.
