Consensus eludes district TDP chief election

Special Correspondent

Chandrababu Naidu holds teleconference

  • Majority of senior leaders favour Baggu Lakshmana Rao
  • The ex-ZP chief is said to be reluctant to accept the offer

Srikakulam: The TDP office here on Tuesday witnessed marathon deliberation over selection of new president for the party district unit. The discussions commenced at 10.30 a.m. and continued well past 7 p.m. The efforts, however, did not lead to any consensus on the issue.

Senior leaders J.R. Pushpa Raj, G. Mohna Rao and Appala Narasimha Raju were present as party observers. MLAs - Kimidi Kalavenkata Rao, Kalamta Mohna Rao, G. Shyma Sundar Sivaji and Kinjarapu Acheyya Naidu - and MP K. Yerrannaidu and other senior leaders, ZPTC and MPTC members attended the meeting.

Earlier, party chief N. Chandrababu Naidu held a teleconference with the leaders and gave certain guidelines. According to sources, Mr. Chandrababu Naidu wanted transparency and, if possible, unanimity. The new incumbent should be acceptable to all sections.

The observers then had deliberations with district coordination committee members over the candidate. According to sources, a majority of the senior leaders wanted Baggu Lakshmana Rao, a senior leader and former ZP chairman, to head the district unit.

    Significance

The post acquired significance because it would be under his stewardship that the party would face Assembly elections in 2009.

However, Mr. Lakhsmana Rao was stated to be reluctant to accept the post on the plea that he had to concentrate on his Assembly segment, namely, Narasannapeta.

    Other probables

The name of Mr. Acheyya Naidu and Tammineni Sitaram, who resigned as district unit convener on the issue of supporting Congress rebel in the MLC elections, had also been broached. But no decision was taken till reports last came in.
