Varsity teacher suspended

Correspondent

CUTTACK: Chemistry reader in Ravenshaw University was placed under suspension on the charge of taking classes in a Plus II private college in Bhubaneswar.

The Governor, in exercise of powers conferred by Clause 9 of Orissa Civil Services (Classification Control and Appeal) Rules of 1962, placed Kanchan Acharya under suspension with immediate effect.

The suspension order of May 16, 2007, communicated to university Registrar Satyakam Mishra, was served on Dr. Acharya on Monday.

Charge denied

When contacted, Dr. Acharya denied taking classes in any private college. "I do not even teach Plus II students," said the teacher who had some 30 years of experience. Sources said that Dr. Acharya, a senior and popular teacher among students, was neither served a show-cause notice nor were the charges against him framed.

Dr. Acharya was allegedly teaching at a private institution.
