BERHAMPUR: Three members of a family consumed poison to commit suicide following frequent quarrels over serving a bed-ridden old woman at Brahmansahi village near Hinjli in Ganjam district. The old woman and her daughter-in-law died after consumption of poison. The woman's son, who also consumed poison, is battling for life at the MKCG medical college hospital.
Frequent quarrels
Simanchal Prusty of Brahamansahi village married Sumitra Prusty one and a half year ago. Simanchal's mother, Baurani Prusty, was bed ridden with paralysis since long. As per social tradition, Simanchal wanted his wife to serve his ailing mother. But according to Simanchal's father, Lingaraj Prusty, his daughter-in-law had antipathy to serve her. This led to a major rift between the husband and wife. On Monday night after a quarrel, both Simanchal and Sumitra consumed some pesticide. By the time their relatives came to know about their suicide attempt Sumitra died. Simanchal was admitted to the MKCG medical college. Simanchal's mother Baurani took the extreme step on Tuesday morning when she heard about the suicide attempt by her son and daughter-in-law. As no one was at home, she managed to get the same pesticide at home used by the couple and drank it. Although she was taken to the Hinjli hospital, doctors could not save her. Police are investigating the case.
