Rain havoc victims get Rs. 150 as relief

Staff Correspondent

Relief distributed in 370 cases, says corporation Commissioner

MYSORE: Over 50 people whose properties, mainly houses, were damaged in the recent torrential rains here, were surprised to receive a cheque for Rs. 150 each from Mysore City Corporation (MCC) as compensation for the loss. The rain, accompanied by high velocity winds, had damaged several houses at Medar Block, Gousia Nagar, Nazarabad areas. Over a dozen houses had partially or fully collapsed in the rain.

After the spot inspection, the officers of the corporation assessed the extent of damage and recommended relief on the basis of the damage to the affected persons.

Perhaps, they had never expected to receive such meagre amount from the corporation as compensation for the loss. "These days, when a small repair costs more than Rs. 500, what is the use of receiving Rs. 150 from the MCC," they said.

However, the corporation Commissioner K.N. Chandrashekar maintained that cheques for Rs. 150 were distributed to only a few persons whose property had very minimal damage. "In fact, for such minimal damage, there is no provision to distribute relief. However, the corporation distributed relief in such cases too," he said.

The Commissioner told The Hindu that compensation had been released in 370 cases in the range of Rs. 500 to Rs. 5,000. Relief worth Rs. 3.43 lakh had been distributed in those cases, he said.

`No provision'

Mr. Chandrashekar said there was no provision for the corporation to disburse relief exceeding Rs. 5,000.

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy had visited the rain-affected areas and promised to help the victims of rain havoc. Public Works and Energy Minister H.D. Revanna, district in-charge Minister G.T. Deve Gowda had also visited the affected areas and promised all possible help.
