FIVB to increase funding to zonal associations

CHENNAI: The FIVB has decided to delegate the President's powers to suspend its Board members for any action contrary to its regulations to an independent Disciplinary Committee.

The committee, after its hearing will give recommendations to the Executive Committee or the Board, which alone will initiate action.

On technical and sport assistance, the Board decided to increase funding to zonal associations with an idea to raise international participation in regions not yet involved in Continental championships.

The yearly financial support has been raised by 50 per cent. In addition, emerging National federations are to be supported with material and technical assistance for development programmes.

The decisions were taken recently at Lausanne where the highest governing bodies of the FIVB, comprising members from 35 countries met to take stock of the 2007-08 competitions calendar.

The feature of the year is the Swatch FIVB beach volleyball World Tour and World championships, the volleyball World league, women's Grand Prix, junior World championships in Morocco (men) and Thailand (women), youth World championship in Mexico for boys' and girls', World Cups in Japan and the Beijing Olympic Games.

The FIVB Board congratulated the Asian Confederation for the impressive report on the Tsunami Reconstruction Programme, which is underway in 18 schools with volleyball courts — eight in Indonesia, five in Thailand, four in Sri Lanka and one in Maldives.

The work will be completed, and operational from 2007-end.

Throwball trials

Trials to select the under-16 boys' and girls' teams to represent Tamil Nadu in the 15th sub-junior National throwball championships at Udayagiri, AP, from June 4 to 6, will be held at Goodwill MHSS, Kolathur, on May 25 at 9 a.m. For details, contact S. Meenakshi Padmanabhan, ph: 94441 41000.

Cricket trials

Trials for the Kancheepuram DCA under-22 and senior teams will be held on May 26 from 7.30 a.m. at the Guru Nanak College, Velachery. The u-17 and 19 trials will be conducted on May 27 at 7.30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Office-bearers elected

Ms. S.K. Bhagyalakshmi and Ms. Renuka Lakshmi were elected president and secretary respectively at the annual meeting of the Tamil Nadu Women's Hockey Association on May 19.

TNP advances

Tamil Nadu Police (TNP) prevailed over Central Excise, Chennai 4-3 via sudden death to make the last-eight grade in the second annual K.N. Subbaraj Memorial Trophy all-India hockey tournament at Kovilpatti on Tuesday.

At the end of regulation time, the teams were locked goalless. In the tie-breaker Srinivasan, Krishna Kumar and Palanivelu scored for Tamil Nadu Police and Mervin, Nirmal and Ravi Kumar scored for Central Excise.

In the sudden death, Palanivelu scored for Police, whereas Ravi Kumar failed.

In another match, South Central Railway, Secunderabad coasted to a 7-1 victory over host Rajiv Gandhi Hockey Club and entered the quarterfinals. SCR toyed with the host from the start and scored at will.
