VISAKHAPATNAM: Municipal Commissioner Mukesh Kumar Meena and officials of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation on Tuesday visited the two corridors on which the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) is proposed under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. The Union Government last week accorded approval for the Pendurthi-Vepagunta- Dwarakanagar via Simhachalam including tunnel through the hills (called Simhachalam Transit Corridor) and the Pendurthy-Dwarakanagar (via NAD Junction) called the Pendurthy Transit Corridor. The combined cost of the corridor is Rs.452.93 crores. Mr. Meena's visit was intended to look into aspects of road alignments, width required and the extent of land to be acquired, if need arose. While the detailed project report is ready, for fine-tuning it a consultant will be appointed, it was learnt. After the Government of Andhra Pradesh accords administrative sanction, tenders will be called which is likely to take about three months. Chief engineer P. Panduranga Rao and city planner G.V. Raghu accompanied him The officials also visited Yatapalem and Srinagar colonies where infrastructure is being created and the One Town area where work on the Rs.37 crores sewage treatment plan has begun.
