Prof. S.R.S. Varadhan
Oslo: Srinivasa Varadhan, a mathematician of Indian origin in the United States, was on Tuesday presented the prestigious Abel Prize for his work on probabilities. The Abel Prize, for outstanding work in the field of mathematics, carries the equivalent of $988,000. Prof. Varadhan, 67, a long-time professor at New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, was presented with the prize by Norway's King Harald V at a formal ceremony in Oslo. The prize jury honoured, in particular, his work on "a unified theory of large deviations," or the study of the occurrence of rare events. Prof. Varadhan is married to Vasundra, also a professor at New York University. The elder of their two sons, Gopal, was killed in the attacks on the World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001. The Abel Prize was created by the Norwegian government in 2002 to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of the great Norwegian mathematician, Niels Henrik Abel. AFP
